If you are considering taking a camping trip into the woods or country, it is often a good idea to make a checklist of materials and supplies you will need. There is nothing worse than getting to your campsite and realizing you forgot something important.
So what should you include on your list? This will partly depend on what type of camping you are doing and the location of your campsite. Are you going minimalistic with only a tent or less? Or do you have a camper or trailer? Where is the campsite located? These are all questions you should keep in mind.
I usually break my checklist into four parts:
1. The Essentials
2. Meal Time
3. Night Time
4. Extra Essentials
The essentials will include basic items such as the tents, sleeping bags, and water. Other things to consider are are blankets, folding chairs, air mattresses, rope, binoculars, bug spray, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and other essential items. You will also need materials to build a fire. These include matches, an axe to split wood, and perhaps a couple pieces of dry wood in case you arrive on a rainy day.
Depending on how minimalistic you plan on going, you might also want to have supplies for cooking and meal time. Start with a cooler to keep food fresh. You may also want some kind of grill to cook on. Other items you can consider putting on your checklist include can openers, forks, knives, spoons, fuel for the grill, napkins, aluminum foil, and trash bags.
I always like to make sure I have plenty of lanterns and flashlights to keep the campsite well lit. Make sure you have fuel for the lanterns and extra batteries for the flashlights.
Other essential items to include will depend on what activities you plan on partaking in once at the campsite. Will you be hunting or hiking? If so, forgetting a compass or extra pair of shoes can ruin your trip. Other things to consider including are playing cards, basic tools (screwdriver, hammer, pliers), first aid kits, cameras, etc.
Hopefully this article gives you some ideas of what you should include on your own camping checklist. By putting some through and consideration into your checklist, you can ensure that you will have a dry place to sleep, good meals to eat, plenty of lighting, and the knowledge you are prepared for whatever comes your way.
