Camping is a fun activity for the whole family. Getting away in the great outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery are all a part of what makes it a great experience. But it is really the association with family and friends that make a camping trip truly great. However, time restrictions or financial situations can make it difficult to get away and enjoy the fun of camping. Never fear, you can have a fun family camping trip in your own backyard - or at the very least in your own town!
Think about it, what do you really need to have a great camping trip? Good food, fun activities and great company! You don't have to drive miles away to experience these things. You can have a great time close to home. But there are some things to consider before you plan your 'stay at home' camping trip.
Check the local ordinances. If you want to have a fire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows over, make sure you know your local fire ordinances. Most areas will allow you to have a fire that is contained in a properly built fire pit or outdoor fireplace. However, in times of extreme drought there may be fire restrictions even on this type of fire. So to be safe, check first!
If you plan to camp somewhere in your town, make sure there are no laws against overnight camping. Many parks have a rule against that to prevent vandalism and loitering. However, there may be a great state park or inexpensive campground close to your home so you could look for one of those.
When you choose to have a camping staycation, you need to make the most of it. Just because you are close to home doesn't mean you should run home for everything you forgot or even to sleep in your own bed! Think about the fun of camping. If you forget something you make do or improvise, so you should do this even though you are close to home. Make the effort to create a trip that is fun for everyone. Do the things you would normally do on a camping trip. Sleep in a tent, tell ghost stories, roast hot dogs and make good use of your dutch oven cookware to make delicious, outdoor meals.
A home camping experience can be a great adventure. In fact, it could become the camping trip your family talks about for years!
